Sheila De Corte is an Ojibwe Elder and knowledge keeper from Animkii Wajiw (Thunder Mountain) on Fort William First Nation. Her Spirit name is Niibin Giimiwan (Summer Rain) and she belongs to the Turtle Clan. Born and raised in Thunder Bay, Sheila retired from the Federal Public Service in 2020 to focus on her cultural path and share her traditional knowledge. She was introduced to the pow-wow circle in 2000, becoming a fancy shawl dancer in 2002 and transitioning to a women's traditional dancer. In 2014,
Sheila began leading the "Sisters of Turtle Island" Women’s Drum Group. She continues to embrace her Anishinaabe way of living including walking for the water to bring healing and awareness of the importance of protecting the water. She and other water walkers are fulfilling their promise to the late Grandmother Water Walker, Josephine, to continue the work she started for the water. Sheila shares awareness and teachings to support “For Love of the Rivers” water walks in Thunder Bay. Sheila studied traditional medicines in a 4-year commitment under Kathy Bird at Matootoo Lake Medicine Camp located in Peguis First Nation (MB) and continues to deepen her cultural practices while supporting Indigenous community events and water protection initiatives.
