Mashkiki Migizi, affectionately known as “Kiki,” is a female Bald Eagle who was hatched in Ontario by a licensed breeder. She was later moved to British Columbia to serve as an educational bird, as Bald Eagles may only be kept there under specific educational or rehabilitation circumstances.
When the COVID-19 pandemic ended public programming, Kiki was returned to her original breeder. My nephew, a Master Falconer who managed the Birds of Prey Program for an international pestcontrol company, later acquired her.
When a career change moved my nephew into branch management, he needed to rehome the seven birds of prey in his care. Six were placed with experienced members of his staff, but the Bald Eagle required someone with additional experience, time, and dedication.
At that time, her name was Helga, an Old Norse name meaning “holy” or “blessed.” When she came into my care, I renamed her Mashkiki Migizi, which means “Medicine Eagle” in Ojibwe. For short, we lovingly call her Kiki.
